When to Book Physiotherapy, Massage, and Kinesiology After an Injury

Dealing with an injury can be a frustrating and painful experience. Knowing when to seek professional help such as physiotherapy, massage therapy, or kinesiology services can make a big difference in your recovery process. In this blog post, we will discuss the importance of booking these services after an injury and provide guidance on when it may be the right time to do so.

After sustaining an injury, it is important to listen to your body and pay attention to any signs of pain or discomfort. While some injuries may heal on their own with rest and proper care, others may require more specialized treatment. If you are experiencing persistent pain, limited range of motion, or difficulty performing daily activities, it may be time to consider booking an appointment with a healthcare professional.

What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy involves helping people to recover from injuries, illnesses, or disabilities. This kind of treatment uses a wide range of techniques to help a patient regain function or movement in affected areas of the body. Some of the most common methods of physiotherapy include exercise therapy, manual therapy, and electrical stimulation. In addition to these, many physiotherapists also use massage therapy techniques, and acupuncture to help improve a patient’s overall health, recovery and wellbeing.

By working with patients to identify their specific needs and goals, a physiotherapist can develop a personalized treatment plan of care that will help them to achieve the best possible outcomes. With the right approach, physiotherapy can be an incredibly effective way to address a wide variety of health challenges and help patients to lead a more functional and active lifestyle. We aim to bring back mobility, achieve functional independence, and enhance overall well-being.

What Physiotherapy can help you with?

  • Sports Injury

What is Kinesiology?

Kinesiology focuses on human movement and exercise science, making it a valuable resource for those looking to prevent future injuries or optimize functional ability post-injury. Booking a session with a kinesiologist can help you develop a personalized exercise program that targets areas of weakness or imbalance caused by the injury.

What Kinesiology can help you with?

  • Chronic pain, stress, anxiety, and even sleep
  • Movement Disorders
  • Motor Vehicle Injuries (ICBC)

    What is Massage therapy?

Massage therapy is another effective treatment option for managing pain and promoting healing and relaxation after an injury. A registered massage therapist can target specific areas of tension or discomfort in the body through various techniques such as deep tissue massage or trigger point therapy. If you are experiencing muscle tightness, soreness, or stiffness following an injury, a massage therapy session can help alleviate these symptoms and improve circulation to aid in the healing process.

What Massage therapy can help you with?

    • Whiplash (back & neck pain) from car accidents
    • Back Pain from sciatica, muscle strain and osteoarthritis
    • Headaches
    • Muscle spasms, stiffness, and pain
    • Conditions like Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, and Osteoporosis
    • Injuries from sports, such as strains in the hamstring or calf/Achilles tendon
    • Strains in the rotator cuff, tennis elbow, and golfer’s elbow

How do I determine if I need a Physiotherapy, Massage Therapy or Kinesiology Appointment?

It is recommended to always book an initial session with a Physiotherapist. If you have suffered from a Motor Vehicle Injury(ICBC) Acute Injury, Sports Injury or Injury at your work (WSBC/WorkSafeBC) a physiotherapist will perform an initial assessment and create a customized treatment plan of care according to your diagnosis, stage of injury and specific needs.

Knowing when to book physiotherapy, massage therapy, or kinesiology after an injury plays a crucial role in facilitating your recovery journey. Having an initial assessment with a Physiotherapist early after your injury, will optimize your chances of achieving a full recovery and preventing future injuries. Remember that every individual’s healing process is unique; therefore, it is essential to have a Initial assessment so that we can provide you with personalized management plan to ensure quick and effective healing.

      FAQs

      • Why should I see a physiotherapist first after my injury?

Seeking the help of a physiotherapist should be your first step. Not only can they provide targeted treatment and exercise to help speed up the quality and rate of healing, but they can also help prevent further injury by identifying any underlying issues that may have caused the injury. In addition, physiotherapists are trained to assess your injury considering the whole body and any other health conditions you may have. By seeing a physiotherapist first, they will assess, treat and coordinate other services to get you on the right path towards better physical health.

      • Can I combine my Physiotherapy treatment with a massage therapy session on the same day?

The answer is yes! In fact, many Physiotherapists recommend it. Combining Physiotherapy and Massage therapy session on the same day can help you achieve a deep sense of relaxation, reduce muscle tension, improve circulation and mobility, and speed up the overall healing process.

      • Is it best to do my Kinesiology appointment before my Physiotherapy appointment or afterwards on the same day?

If it is the first kinesiology session, physiotherapy should be afterwards to assess how the exercise impacted the muscles and joints. If a patient has had a few treatments of kinesiology, then it makes no difference to have kinesiology before or after physiotherapy.
